A Guy With a $7.5 Million Whiskey Collection Is Now Selling His Own Brand Of Scotch
The Atlanta building tycoon with perhaps the world's best whiskey collection is peddling a seriously fine Scotch.
An Atlanta construction magnate who owns one of the world's greatest private whiskey collections is now selling his own brand of $950 single-malt Scotch.
Mahesh Patel has amassed a boozy treasure trove of more than 5,000 rare and exquisite bottles, which he estimates at being worth at least $7.5 million, and perhaps as much as $10 million.
Patel's personal Whiskey River flows from storied hooch houses spanning Macallan to Dalmore, and specializes in historic, one-off whiskies that can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single bottle, like the absurdly rare Dalmore 64 Trinitas. But forget about pulling off a daring whiskey heist—Patel houses his sprawling collection at secure, undisclosed locations across Scotland and the U.S.
"It's not about the quantity, it's about the quality," Patel says. "I'm not buying for numbers, it's about the rare pieces." Still, he's not just some cold-hearted collector; he likes to drink this stuff, too. "My rule is I buy two of everything I can afford, because I'm all about opening up the bottle and tasting it."
To that end, Patel is now peddling 1,000 bottles of 26-year-old, single-malt Scotch called Prometheus after the Greek fire god. And if its gorgeously smoky burn doesn't singe your palate, the $950 price tag will certainly burn through some cash. Patel acknowledges Prometheus is meant primarily "for connoisseurs and collectors", and plans on releasing more limited-edition, boutique whiskies from Ireland, Japan and the U.S.
In the meantime, the high-living whiskey baron is hosting a "super-tasting" of a $250,000 bottle of Royal Salute's Tribute to Honour whiskey at a private dinner in London next month.
Sounds like one hell of a hangover.
