"whisky made by budget supermarket chain Lidl has beat off competition from around the world to scoop a top prize at The World Whiskies Awards. The retailer's Glen Alba, a 22-year-old blended whisky priced at just £29.99, was named the best 'special release' blended whisky of 2015. It trumped premium whiskies from more established brands, including Johnnie Walker's Blue Label Limited Release 2015, which retails for over $258 (£177).
During blind tasting, the judges praised the whisky's "warm, rich and unctuous palate" which "gives way to lingering, dry barley sugar finish. Plums, raisins and fruit cake are complemented by dry, sweet oak. Great balance.”
Two other Lidl whiskies also won awards: Ben Bracken 22 Year Islay Single Malt (£44.99) was named the best Islay single malt whisky while the Queen Margot 3 Year Blended Scotch Whisky (£10.99) was judged the best Scotch blended limited release whisky 12 years and under. "
